Copley Society is established.
1879
Originally the Boston Art Students’ Association and formed by recent graduates of the School of the Museum of Fine Artist, it is located in the former Winslone Skating Rink at 200 Clarendon Street (renamed the Grundmann Studios in 1893). The oldest art association in the U.S., its membership is initially open only to graduates of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. The organization opens up its membership to others and assumes its current name in 1901. The organization subsequently moves to the Boston Art Club, then to Commonwealth Avenue, then to its current location at 158 Newbury Street in 1957.
